Dommie See Becomes Pixar's First Female Short Film Director with "Bao" [Updated

Pixar's short film "Bao," which will likely screen before "Incredibles 2," will debut on April 21 as part of the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City.

Written and directed by Chinese-Canadian and American artist Dommy Shi, the film is the first of Pixar's 20 shorts in 32 years to be directed by a woman. Becky Neiman-Cobb will produce, with Pete Docter and John Lasseter serving as executive producers. Music is by Toby Chu ("The Legend of Oz: Dorothy's Return," "Unforgettable," NBC's "The Brave").

According to the Tribeca Film Festival commentary, Bao is about "an empty-nester Chinese mother who gets a second chance at motherhood when one of her dumplings comes to life, but must accept the bittersweet fact that nothing stays cute and small forever." [After graduating from Sheridan in 2011, Shea began working as a story intern at Pixar that same year. Since then, she has worked as a story artist on "Inside Out," "The Good Dinosaur," and "Toy Story 4."

UPDATE (3/30/18) The first stills of the film's main characters have been released, along with development drawings of the dumpling characters; an article in Entertainment Weekly revealed new information about the film.
