Disney Artist Unveils Concept Art for "Inner Workings"

Artists involved in Disney's latest short film, "Inner Workings," an Academy Award nominee for Best Short Film, have apparently received permission to post their work online.

While the film's director, Leo Mazda, has yet to personally release his work, at least three artists involved in the project, Nick Orsi, Mike Yamada, and Jeremy Spears, have posted their development work online.

Spears has posted photos of sculptures he created during the development of the film. Matsuda commented on these sculptures, "At some point, I began to doubt myself how far I could push the character design, but Jeremy proved with his charming sculptures that we could still push it further."

Orsi, who has published the most work of any of the artists, has posted very early artwork, including cut drawings that Matsuda drew for his initial presentation to John Lasseter and the rest of the studio when he proposed the idea that organs could become characters.

As the author of The Art of Pixar Short Films, I am well aware of the dedication and effort required to complete an animated short film. Even though animated shorts are not always treated as art books, it is a pleasure to see the clever artwork used to create these films being made available online.
