Sascha Chiezata is using Instagram to serialize his short story "Deep in the Darkness"

Los Angeles-based animator Sascha Ciezata has reimagined Joseph Conrad's 1899 novel "The Dark Depths" as a series of mixed media animated shorts, releasing his work nightly via his Instagram account.

Reminiscent of Conrad's protagonist Charles Marlow and his experiences as an ivory carrier in the Congo, Ciezata's "Deep in the Darkness" follows Marley, a brave subway rat in search of the Rat King, as he navigates a New York City tunnel flooded by the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy

Ciezata uses still images, short animated Instagram videos, genius hashtags, and, in the clip below, snippets of a lively Henry Mancini number.

New episodes of Ciezata's Heart of Darkness will be released daily at 7pm (10pm CST) on the @DarkHeartNYC Instagram account.
