Details of DreamWorks' new film "Ruby Gilman, Teenage Kraken" have been revealed for the first time.

Ahead of Thursday's trailer release, Universal Pictures Ireland has released the first official details about DreamWorks' new animated theatrical release, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken

"Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken" was announced.

The film, which was produced under the working title "Meet the Gillmans," is directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Kirk DeMicco ("Vivo," "The Croods," "Space Chimps"), Kelly Cooney Cilella ("Bilby," "Trolls World Tour") will produce. Farin Pearl ("The Croods: A New Age," storyboard artist for "Trolls World Tour") will co-direct.

Teenage Kraken is voiced by Lana Condor, Toni Collette, Annie Murphy, Sam Richardson, Liza Causey, Will Forte, Colman Domingo, Javorky Young-White, Blue Chapman, Eduardo Franco Ramona Young, Echo Kellam, Nicole Byer, Jane Fonda, and others.

Universal's website does not list a release date. DreamWorks often releases one film in the first half of the year, like The Bad Guys in 2022, and one in the holiday season, like Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. With the next film in the Trolls slated for late 2023, it is reasonable to expect "Teenage Kraken" to be released in theaters this summer.

"Teenage Kraken" follows shy 16-year-old Ruby Gilman (Condor) as she discovers that she is the next generation of the legendary Sea Kraken royal family. Despite her noble destiny, all Ruby wants to do is blend in with her surroundings. At school, she falls in love with a skater boy who tutors her, but he does not seem to like Ruby. Her mother (Colette) forbids Ruby from going to the beach with a boy who might be her friend. But when Ruby decides not to follow her mother's instructions, she learns that she is a descendant of the Warrior Kraken Queen and will one day ascend the throne of her grandmother, voiced by Fonda, as Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas.

In the film, the Kraken are a race sworn to protect the world's oceans from the vain and power-hungry mermaids, and the two have been battling for centuries. The generational conflict comes to a head when a popular mermaid named Chelsea enrolls in Ruby's school

Last year, DreamWorks impressed with "Bad Guys" and the Oscar-nominated "Puss in Boots": two films that showed the studio's design and animation These two films showed that studios were willing to take risks in terms of design and animation. The first official images from Ruby Gilman confirm that these two films were not outliers, and DreamWorks continues to expand the limits of CG visuals.
