Roc Preddin's "Back in the Day

Rok Predin's Back in the Day is a nostalgic ode to his childhood, based on his memories of growing up in Slovenia in the 1980s. The project was funded by Preddin's employer, Trunk Animation of London, which granted him a two-month studio residency.

"It was great to just dive into this project with no restrictions or expectations and just enjoy exploring and playing with the software," says Preddin. Since Animatic had already set the rhythm, flow, and pace of the film, I loved the two months I spent there, enjoying the creative process like a painter and exploring the different aspects of filmmaking, from modeling to compositing to editing the final shot, like a "one man band! "

In the making-of video below, you can see a breakdown of Preddin's shots. To achieve the quirky movement of the character, Predin ignored standard rigging and instead used Cinema 4D's Xpresso language to code custom slider-driven puppet controls for the character.
