Annecy 2017: 87 short films and 49 graduation films in the Official Selection

The Annecy International Animated Film Festival has released part of the official selection for the 2017 edition.

Eighty-seven short films were selected for the Competition category, while 49 student films were selected for the Graduation category. In total, more than 2,800 projects were submitted in all categories. Entries were received from 95 countries.

The selection was made by the Festival's Artistic Director, Marcel Jean, and the Film & Program Planning Team consisting of Laurent Million, Yves Nougalade, and Sébastien Sperrer. In addition, Peggy Zeigmann-LeCarme, director of the Cinémathèque de Grenoble, also participated in this year's selection of short films.

The festival noted that in these two categories, nearly half (48%) of the films selected were directed or co-directed by women. France, Canada, and Belgium were most frequently selected. Of the 87 short films selected in Competition, only two were made in the United States. However, American students fared well, with eight of the 49 selections being American productions.

The official selection of Annecy TV series, specials, and commissions will be announced at the end of March, while the selection of feature films will be announced in late April.

The full list of selected shorts can be found on the Annecy website.

Annecy also recently unveiled its 2017 poster, designed by French animators and directors Hugo Bienvenu and Kevin Manac. Their poster is said to reference China, the guest country of Annecy 2017, and erotica, one of the themes of this year's festival.
