'Steven Universe' debuts tonight on Cartoon Network

"Steven Universe," a new animated series written by Rebecca Sugar, debuts tonight (8pm/7pm ET) on Cartoon Network. The show is Cartoon Network's first series by a sole female creator and carries the weight of a historical precedent. (To preview the series, read Rebecca's interview with Rebecca on io9. Starting Tuesday, Cartoon Brew will air a weekly roundup of "Steven Universe" all season long. Every twist and turn in the development of Steven and his world will be lovingly dissected by new writer Kendra Beltran, a late addition to MTV Geek. [Not only because Rebecca's storytelling contains an exceptional level of depth and humanity, but also because we've been following her meteoric rise for years now. In fact, Cartoon Brew was the first major media outlet to write about her work: in 2007, we featured her then-20-year-old quirky fan art and wrote that she had a "bright future ahead of her." Little did we know how bright a future it would be, filled with crystal gems. Then her School of Visual Arts graduation film, Singles, was featured on Cartoon Brew TV in 2009. Sugar then moved to Los Angeles to work on Adventure Time.
