The GKIDS interfere with North America's right to Alberto Vázquez's psychedelic war fable "The Unicorn War."

Spanish writer Alberto Vázquez's Unicorn Wars gets a North American theatrical run after it was announced today that GKIDS had won the film's distribution rights for the territory.

Unicorn Wars has competed at many of the biggest festivals of the year, including Annecy, the Ottawa International Animation Festival and the BFI London Film Festival, and is about to premiere in the US at the Fantastic Fest in Austin later this month.

The film is a psychedelic antiwar fable that unfolds in the midst of a religiously fuelled battle between a cute colorful bear and a shadowy unicorn, as morbid and as funny as it is a visual feast of color and movement, as seen in the trailer below.

According to GKIDS, Unicorn Wars will be released in theaters in North America in early 2023 after being released in Spain this fall. The film is represented for international sale by the charade of the main French costume.

Vázquez's films have won awards at many of the world's most prestigious film festivals. Last year, his short homeless home won a Jury Award at Annecy, screened at Fantoche, Clermont-Ferrand in Ottawa, and was nominated for an Academy Goya Award in Spain. His breakout feature, Birdboy: The Forgotten Children, was also distributed in North America by Gkids and won awards at the platino Awards, Goyas and Fantasia Film Festival.
