-When Adam changed,悲惨A disastrous miracle - take the top prize at Ottawa 2023.

The 2023 Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) came to an end on the weekend when Canadian films hit the judges and Japanese films won Best Short for 3 consecutive years.

The best feature of the year was Joël Vaudreuil's When Adam Changes, a surreal Canadian comedy that caught our eye at this year's Annecy Contrechamp competition. Produced by David Pierrat and Olivier Picard of Parce Que Films, the film is a wild and bizarre suburban journey with a dark sense of humor and a laggy sweetness as the viewer. The OAIF feature film jury, composed of Jessica Borutski (Canada), Joel Frenzer (USA) and Matthew Rankin (Canada), says about when Adam will change: For the filmmaker's skilful walk of subtle lines of irony and honesty, for his mastery of absurdity, for the detail and precision of his artistic approach, and for the genuine hearty humor, the winner of this year's Best Animated Feature award is Adam Change lentement (When Adam is Changed) by Joel Vaudreuil.

Ryo Orikasa's "Wretched Miracle" won the Grand Prize for short animation, followed by 2022's "Bird of the Peninsula" and 2021's "Bone Bite", which became the 3rd Japanese film. It is also worth noting that the film was part of Ottawa's non-narrative section.This is a category of filmmaking that is often overlooked by film festival judges who support narrative narratives. The Japanese-French-Canadian co-production iserable Miracle is an animated adaptation of Henri Micheau's book of the same name (1956), about his experience with Mescaline. In the film, lines of text in the book fill the screen, begin to vibrate and deform, and when the narrator reads the author's original words, individual letters break down and turn into stick figures.

According to the Short jury, it consists of Xi Chen (China), Alla Gadassik (Canada) and Parissa Mohit (Canada):

The film animates as an intoxicating cocktail of images, words and movements that activate the senses of hallucinations and synesthesia in the audience. In order to explore the boundaries of animation and affirm it as a timeless poetic art form, the jury awards the grand Prize to the harrowing miracle of Ryo Orikasa.

Alexandra Myotte and Jean-Sébastien Hamel's Crab in The Pool made it to the top in this year's Canadian Short competition. The film tells the story of an adulthood that turns young Zoe and her brother Theo, left to fend for themselves in a dilapidated neighborhood. The animation is just weird enough to be a lot of fun without adversely affecting the grounded story of the 2 brothers.

Continuing an impressive month in Canada, Daria Kascheeva's recent Toronto Best Short Film winner Electra won the OAIF Wacom Public Award of the year. The film is told from a first-person perspective of an adult titular protagonist who recalls her 10th birthday and the lasting trauma it caused. Her memories are intertwined with dreams and imagination, and are expressed in an off-kilter mix of cinematic animation techniques.
