Welshman is no stranger to the attention of the awards season. The 2017 film Loving Vincent won the European Film Award for Best Animated Feature, the Annecy Audience Award, and was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe.

Farmers have beaten a strong field of live-action titles, including Agnieszka Holland's Green Border, which won 7 awards at this year's biennale in Venice. The decision of the Polish selection committee did not materialize without considerable controversy. Poland's far-right government is engaged in a coordinated campaign against the green border, with some government officials comparing it to "Nazi propaganda" for its portrayal of the refugee crisis on Poland's border with Belarus.
